"This book really took me back to what a normal day was probably like for the settlers moving “out west “ back in the day. Everything about this book was written in a way that related to the excitement and dangers of the journey. Whatever the reason for the journey one thing was certain, it was going to be a hard and difficult trip.
You will follow a family that will go through the daily occurrences of setting up camp, taking down camp. The Daily tending of the stock and meal preparation along with the fun but also the tragedy and even death. The author has put all this into a very exciting and well written book that you will definitely enjoy."

  • Wonderful tale of a family traveling west across the United States by wagon train. Great story line and very believable characters. Every possible emotional feeling is stimulated. Hard to put down. Great read for ALL ages. An historical novel that lets the reader experience what it must have been like.
  • I have three of my grandchildren reading this book. We have discussed the pioneer trek to Oregon on holidays in the past. Lucky for Granpaw, Larry J. Martin’s novel answers all our questions and provides a gripping adventure yarn to boot. Read this book and pass it along. It is a reflection of the American spirit that made our country great.
  • Was a very good read. I also like at the end where the author added some history
  • LJ Martin – Western Romance - Two Thousand Grueling Miles – Reviewed - 3/11/19 Read 2/24-25/19

A family packs up and heads to Oregon before the war breaks out. Two thousand and counting!!!

What did I like? This was a refreshing read for me as it has been a while since I have read a western and what a book this was. The research is clear on every page as this family leaves their life in the Midwest and heads to Oregon. Knowing that there was going to be a war Mr. Zane wanted to get his family clear of it before it happens. Hearing only good things about the Oregon area they pack up and head out. This was a message that could be sent to every young man today about becoming a man and taking responsibility. Just thinking about what that 15-year-old boy had to face was heartbreaking.

What will you like? Well written with clear facts about what life was like during that time and how small the world could be. The history lesson and the clear message to the youngsters of today can be seen on every page. What would you do if you were in Jake Zane's place? How would you take charge and bring your family more than 1500 miles in a wagon after facing Indians, cholera, discrimination, and outlaws? A great read for all ages. I received this from the author as an ARC copy for an honest review with no other compensation.
  • L. J. Martin has written a wonderful story of a family journeying two thousand miles across this great nation, detailing the trials and tribulation they had to endure along the way. I’ve read many of Martin’s books and I enjoyed them all. This book is a little different than the average shoot em up westerns we’re all used to, but it was still excellent reading and it's a book you won’t want to put down. I found myself going to bed early so I could read more of the book without being disturbed. I have always enjoyed Martin’s westerns and this book is no different. If you want a good western to read, then I recommend “TWO THOUSAND MILES A GRUELING JOURNEY”. A great story by a great author.

  • Jake Owen along with his family packed up what they had on the property and joined a wagon train bound for the west. This was not the plan of a boy on the cusp of manhood to undertake but this is what his father desired and this is what was going to be done. Jake knew his role and accepted his father’s decisions as they joined up with a wagon train where the leader was less than hospitality to his family. The days were long, the nights lonely and in the middle was walking, herding, and trying not to die every minute of the day. Nothing was a certainty except not following the rules and winding up stranded with no idea where they were going.
While on this journey Jake knew his life would change but the there were losses he was not prepared for and the responsibilities that go with becoming the man of the house. Jake knew how to take of his sisters, but to take on the entire expedition was at times harrowing as well as terrifying. Jake grew up in the blink of an eye and never looked back at what was the right step to take and avoid the ones that led to trouble. Jake would defend his family and right to be there and hopefully never regret a decision he makes along the way. Right now, Jake knows the best way down this road is to cross the stream and hope for the best, next time who knows.
This is a wonderful read and reminder of how things were built from one person knowing that today we change, we move, we advance to another place and see where that adventure takes us. To experience the glory of the burgeoning west through the eyes of a reader, it takes a master wordsmith to produce the scenery. The one man who can make you feel the burn or the sun, the dry of the range, and the brutality of how the West was won is only with L.J. Martin. You will never regret your time spent with Mr. Martin’s bookshelf.
  • A Western, set on the Oregon Trail. Jake Zane, 15-year-old, is challenged with weather, hunger, savages. He had to grow up fast, and fast he did. What a good character, one I grew to admire. A role model for our children.

The family embraced a run-away slave. It was a rough time in the United States history but stories like this showed the rest of the story. The message redemption.

I love the details, the history lessons, and the "real-life" experience. The latter put me in the covered wagon. The dangers felt real. The excitement, exhilarating. It was an era to start a new life and those on the wagon train were doing just that.

Great story. Good lessons. Memorable plot. I highly recommend it.
